A Year Without NaNoWriMo

Today marks that magical first day for so many aspiring authors around the world.  The day they embark on National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) and start to write the 50,000 words that will become their novel.

This year, I won't be with them.

Not for lack of wanting to.  Or ideas.  This is the first year in the past five years that I am not going to write a novel.

It's because I want to write and illustrate a children's book instead.  I have three solid ideas I'd like to attempt, but my goal is to just finish one.

But children's books don't happen to be 50,000 words.  Not the storybook kind.

So, I wish everyone who is doing NaNo great luck!

Pants on, my friendly pantsers.

  1. Probably the best excuse ever to not participate in something like this! xD I do think, though, that something like this should count for the NaNoWriMo thing. I understand it's novels, but are there months for other kinds of books or publications? None that I'm aware of. And we need children's books just as much as we need novels, if not more!

  2. I am not doing Nano either. I'm a bit sad about that, as I love the manic word flow. But even the basic story isn't flowing, and my characters aren't talking to me at the moment. Maybe that will change. Or not. I think better to build a head of steam for next year, than to slog away not having any fun, producing words just to produce words.
