Friday Reads: A Game of Thrones by George RR Martin

In a word?  Wow!  I don't think I have been this captivated by a book in recent days.  Even more surprising - the rate at which my hubby is plowing through the series (he doesn't usually spend a lot of time reading).

I had bought the books, but another book always seemed to take priority for me and I never seemed to get to the point where I would just start it already.  I really want to watch the series, but I needed to read the books first before I would allow myself to delve in. Ever since the TV series came out - we have only managed to catch a random episode here and there.  Barely enough to follow along. The time had come to just read it already!

I can't believe I waited so long!

A Game of Thrones is the first book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series by George RR Martin.  This series has so many of the elements of fantasy that I adore all rolled into a nice, neat package.   Power struggles, epic journeys, betrayal, romance, intrigue, mystical creatures, family feuds, wars...it's all there.

It is a dark book - very medieval in feeling but the writing is gorgeous.  Martin is truly a master of words and he weaves both a tale and a world that are real and believable.   The characters he has created possess an incredible amount of depth.  I'm not usually one who goes for too much character development - I just want to get to the action already - but in this book, I found myself enjoying the process of getting to know each one and to discover their secrets as they were poured into the prose.

I know I usually do a little recap of the plot in my reviews, but I am going to stray from that in this instance.  If you enjoy a good epic fantasy (nay - a GREAT epic fantasy) then pick this one up.  You are sure to fall as deeply in love with it as both hubby and I have!
