Friday Reads: My Summer in Books

I'm almost through Committed by Elizabeth Gilbert (the Eat.Pray.Love. lady)  It's good, but I'm not going to finish it in time for this week's Friday Reads.   So check back next week for my review on that one.

This week, I'm going to share my summer reading list and give a few recommendations of books I've read recently that are worth picking up.  It seems like I have received emails throughout this week, announcing upcoming books from series that I follow.  Suddenly, I have a crapload of books to devour as they are released.  How perfect! This should keep me out of trouble this summer :)

The Measure of the Magic - Terry Brooks

The next installment of the Legends of Shannara duology is due out at the end of July.  I've been following this series for what seems like forever and Brooks releases a new book pretty much every year.  I can't wait to tear into this one :)

The Omen Machine - Terry Goodkind
Confessor was the end of the Sword of Truth Series, so imagine my surprise when I open an email to see the upcoming release of a new Richard and Kahlan novel!   Yay!  The series is cheesy but I loved all 11 books of it and cannot wait to open book 12 next week when it becomes available.

Nothing Stays in Vegas - Elena Aitken
I stumbled upon Elena Aitken last year on Twitter when we had a little conversation with another lady we were both following.  When I saw that she was in Okotoks, was a runner, writer AND had twins...I knew she would be a great gal to follow...and I was right.   I've never met her in person (yet) but it's only a matter of time.  I already think of her as being a similar soul to me and I was very excited when she decided to self publish her first novel (since that is probably the avenue I will take with The Loracian Stone when it is ready).  This one is defintiely on my must-read list this summer.  In fact - it's only a few bucks for the ebook so I recommend you guys pick it up and give it a read as well!   Let's build her a fan base :) (the link is for the kindle can get other versions on Smashwords)

A Visit from the Goon Squad - Jennifer Egan
I initially had no desire to read this, but friends, favourite authors and the general internet is bliing it as a "must read" lately so I want to see what all the fuss is about :)

A Discovery of Witches - Deborah Harkness
I'm always on the watch for female fantasy writers and this one has been getting some great reviews (and has been on the bestseller lists a while).

Bossypants - Tina Fey
I've heard it's laugh out loud funny and I like Fey so it's on my reader, awaiting my attention.

Enchanted Inc - Shanna Swendson
Chick lit with a fantasy slant sounds like a good way to pass a couple of hours sitting in the sun :)  This one is part of a series so I may have a few sunny days filled this summer :)

A Game of Thrones - George RR Martin
I'd never heard of it before the HBO series and, while I seem to be unable to consistently watch the series - I've heard raves about the novels so am going to give them a whirl...maybe this will turn into the series I follow all winter :)

The Accidental Billionaires - Ben Mezrich
This is the one that the movie "The Social Network" was based on.  Loved the movie and I wish I'd read the book first so I'm going to do some making up for lost time.

  1. The only one of those books I have read is The Game of Thrones. GREAT series, I recommend it. I haven't seen the HBO series, but hope to someday, I have read good things about it. I just am too cheap to pay for HBO.

  2. thanks for the shoutout and the support, Cori. Much appreciated!! I hope you enjoy Nothing Stays In Vegas.
And yes...I too think that we are similar souls!
