Back when I was fundraising for TNT, I raised A LOT over the fundraising minimum and as an award, they gave me an iPod Nano. Since I don't run with headphones, it hasn't really been used for much over the last couple of months. Yesterday, on a lark, I decided to clip it onto my belt and activate the pedometer. I was really just curious about how many steps I take on an average day and thought it would be neat to see how it works.
I spent half of yesterday just counting my steps as I walked to see how accurate it was. The verdict: it seems pretty accurate. As a result of my little experiment - I also discovered I might be related to a slug...or perhaps a turtle. Sure - I work out pretty much 6 days a week at a pretty high level, but I apparently cease to move once that workout is complete. The past 2 days, I have clocked just over 2000 steps. Sad, really. I hope I'm not leaving a trail of sluggy slime behind me as I take them.
To add insult to injury, I received my copy of Fitness magazine in the mail yesterday and upon cracking it open, there was a little blurb in there that said the average American takes 5,000 steps a day. I don't even hit the halfway point of that!
So, what's a girl to do about the discovery that she is either part slug or part turtle (perhaps I am a new hybrid of both)? I guess it's time I pull up my big girl panties and do something about it. Time to spend less time sitting and more time zooming around the house. Perhaps my housekeeping skills (or lack thereof) will improve as I seek out ways to keep moving. In the meantime, I guess that little nano is going to spend a lot more time clipped to my waist.
